Fire is a risk at home and at work, it costs UK businesses millions of pounds of damage every year as well as jeopardising families, employees and customers.  Many businesses never survive the devastation that a fire can wreak.  You can minimise the risk of fire on your premises with a fire detection and alarm system.  These systems are an essential part of any commercial building but equally vital in domestic properties too.

Whatever the size or location of your property, we can provide you with a fire protection system tailor-made to meet your requirements.  We can work closely with the Fire Brigade and with manufacturers of fire protection equipment, often inviting them to view a site before we design a system.

Fire Detection and Awareness

Our FIA trained sales and technical staff will provide you with a firm quotation and our Engineers will install the system to the highest standards.  We are always happy to provide competitive quotes for upgrading existing equipment as well as new systems.

Fire Alarms
Our range of fire detection and alarm systems includes conventional, "two-wire", or "addressable" systems, as well as alarm-intelligent fire detection packages.
Qualified engineers and designers will assess your requirements and provide the best value option for your premises. The system can be linked to a central station so that the Fire Brigade can be alerted in the event of an alarm.  Fire detection technologies available include:

  • Optical detection
  • Ionisation
  • Heat detection
  • VESDA
  • Beam technology
  • Call points

Maintenance

Your fire protection and alarm systems and emergency lighting must be regularly serviced and maintained in order to function efficiently. Maintaining these systems is a legal requirement under the terms of the Fire Precautions in the Workplace regulations.

Most commonly systems are checked either two or four times a year. We offer a range of customised maintenance packages offering a rapid callout service, 365 days a year.

The Regulations

The 'Fire Safety Order' replaced the Fire Precautions Act 1971, and the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997.

In 1997 the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations were introduced requiring business that did not need a fire certificate to conduct a fire risk assessment. This new act broadly bought UK legislation into line with much of Europe.

In December 1999 the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations were amended. The amendment broadened the scope of the legislation to include businesses that had a fire certificate.

To simplify the legislation it has been replaced with one common regulation:-

  • The Regulatory Reform (Fire safety Order) 2005.
  • This ordercame into force on 1st October 2006.

Fire Certificates are no longer in force and instead Fire Risk Assessment becomes the primary method to manage fire risk in the workplace. The new fire regulations identifies a ‘responsible person’ who as its name would suggest is required to ensure that a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is on site. Along with Fire Certificates being phased out the new fire legislation requires the responsible person to take account of the impact that a fire might have to surrounding premises and persons. This includes the safety of fire fighters should they need to enter the premises.

The effect of the Order is to:

  • Create one simple fire safety regime applying to all 'non-domestic' premises
  • Scrap fire certificates
  • Place full responsibility for the fire safety of the occupants of premises and people who might be affected by a fire with the responsible person
  • Require a Fire Risk Assessment to be carried ou
  • Require the preservation and maintenance of fire precautions required under building regulations and other similar legislation, which are for the use and protection of the fire brigade
  • Increase powers of entry for Fire Authorities to investigate fires and give them the power to take away samples for testing
  • Place the emphasis on business continuity, and containing and preventing the spread of small fires
  • Require the training of staff and provide fire emergency plans

Employers must ensure the provision and maintenance of 'risk appropriate' fire precautions, which include adequate:

  • Fire fighting measures, & nominated employees to implement them;
  • Fire-fighting equipment, fire detection & alarms
  • Adequate equipment & training;
  • Arrangements for contacting emergency services;
  • Emergency routes and exits; and
  • Maintenance of fire safety measures.

All fire safety measures provided must be as a result of a fire risk assessment, and where 5 or more persons are employed, the risk assessment must be recorded.

To help you carry out your fire risk assessment, the Government has issued 11 guidance documents, which can be purchased or downloaded free from www.communities,gov.uk
